Patriotism shines along the Coast

The Fourth of July came a few days early in Biloxi, D’Iberville, Ocean Springs and other cities across the Coast.

Old Glory was the centerpiece at every swearing in ceremony for our new city officials and those who heard Ronny Broussard pour his heart into the National Anthem at the Biloxi inauguration felt his patriotism fill every corner of the auditorium.

How disappointing that such a small percentage of those who are eligible to vote actually registered and went to the polls. How inspiring it was to see so many people came to witness their officials sworn in and begin their new terms with such hope.

The focus of the next four years will be much the same as the last four — rebuilding the cities from Hurricane Katrina.

“As I’ve said time and again since Katrina, I could not be more proud of the way that the people of Biloxi have dealt with this storm,” said Mayor A.J. Holloway.Since Katrina, D’Iberville has become one of the hottest spots for development, said Mayor Rusty Quave, but they had to go after developers and grant money. “We had to go out and fight for every dollar we got,” he said.

There were proud brothers, children, spouses and mothers in the crowd to see the swearing in and Christy McCauley delighted and surprised her father, D’Iberville Councilman Henry Toncrey, by coming from Arkansas for the ceremony.

The officials expressed such pride in their cities,

“I love Biloxi with all my heart and I want this city to be the best it can be,” said Biloxi Councilman Tom Wall.New Biloxi Councilman Clark Griffith said his wife of 46 years followed him around the world while he served in the U.S. Air Force. “Here we go again, Jean, another great adventure,” he said after taking the oath.

Gautier Mayor-Elect Tommy Fortenberry told me in an interview he hopes the residents won’t be waiting to see if the new mayor and council stumble, which they will at times, “They need to pray for the elected officials of Gautier that God will lead us and guide us in the decisions we make for the city,” he said.

Our founding fathers couldn’t say it any better.
