Young angler lands a 38-pound whopperBy: Al Jones BILOXI — Scales had just opened for the second round of the 61st Annual Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo when one of the best fish stories came in. The rodeo, billed as “the world’s largest fishing rodeo” has been known as an event where the best anglers — mostly adults — in South Mississippi showcase their talents. On Friday, one of those anglers was Zachary Wilson of Necaise Crossing. Wilson isn’t the typical angler, nor did he use a typical rod-and-reel to land a fish of a lifetime. The 10-year-old Hancock North Elementary student stole the show Friday with a 38-pound, 7-ounce black drum. Wilson, who plays football, baseball and basketball, caught the monster fish on a Zebco 202 reel equipped with an eight-pound test line. “I was fishing, that’s all,’’ he said. “I was using a piece of shrimp that I had taken the head off. I was casting, hoping to catch a fish.’’ Wilson, who was fishing near the Biloxi Bay Bridge, had already caught a couple of white trout when his pole bent over. It didn’t take Wilson long to realize he didn’t have another white trout. “I thought it was a shark,’’ he said. “I fought him for 20 minutes or so. He got tired. I did, too. “That’s my first black drum and my biggest fish. It felt good.’’ So what will Wilson do to top this catch? He’s already registered for today’s children’s rodeo. “A day early,’’ he said. “I will go back and try it again. All I was doing was casting and fishing for whatever. That was fun. Let’s do it again.’’ Posted at www.sunherald.com on July 3, 2009
